Precursors to ADHD

By Lauren Fawcett

Introduction

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, has not always been known by its current name and diagnostic criteria. In fact, the label “ADHD” was not used as a diagnostic term until it replaced “Attention Deficit Disorder” in the revised edition of the DSM-III in 1987 (Conrad & Potter, 2000). Although the term is a fairly recent one, the symptoms of hyperactivity and inattention that characterize the disorder have been observed and commented on for many decades. In this section of the website, we will explore the precursors to modern ADHD.
